Guide: Chengdu 2021 World University Games
29 Jun 2023

After being delayed by two years due to the Covid Pandemic, the Chengdu 2021 FISU Summer World University Games is set to take place on 28th July 2023 till 8th August. We are literally in the final straight and less than a month away before the sporting event commences, and the excitement is palpable across the city. It’s the third time that China has hosted the Summer Universiade after 2001 in Beijing and Shenzhen in 2011, and it’s a pretty big deal!

So what is the Summer World University Games? It is a biennial international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), occurring every 2 years. The first iteration of the event is widely known to have taken place in Paris in 1924 although the first official FISU event took place in Turin in 1959. The most recent summer event was in Naples during 2019 and Chengdu is up next. The first world-class sporting event to be held in western China. There are a total of 18 sports events, including basketball, volleyball, athletics, swimming etc. During this time, more than 10,000 athletes and officials from about 170 countries and regions will arrive in Chengdu to participate. It promises to be a wonderful summer of sports.

Preparations have long been made to host a global event of this magnititude. 51 venues across the large metropolis have been passed for use. Among them, the newly built Dong’an Lake Sports Park in Longquanyi which features one stadium and three gymnasiums which has been designdated as class A sporting facilities. The Dong’an Stadium will hold both the opening and closing ceremonies. The Dong’an Lake sports park site itself is also a beautiful scenic area open for tourists daily and a great attraction for visitors.

Let’s learn more about the Chengdu Universiade. The games’ slogan is “成都成就梦想” which means ‘Chengdu Makes Dreams Come True '. An inspirational and apt message signifying the gathering of all student-athletes around the globe to compete in Chengdu to make their dreams come true and live to the fullest.

The logo of the Chengdu Universiade is meticoulous designed. The main design is based on the English initial ‘U’ corresponding to the ‘U’ in World University Games. The striking aspect of the design is the usage of typical Chinese elements of the Sun and Immortal Birds and the Phoenix with the colours used mirroring that of the FISU logo. The mascot of the Chengdu Universiade is of course a giant panda named ‘Rongbao’ given the animal is emblematic and native of the city. Rongbao’s ears, eyes and tail take the form of flame-like patterns and in its hands is the Universiade torch with the flame shaped like the number 31 to symbolize this 31st edition of the games.

It is hoped hosting the Universiade in Chengdu will create a beneficial and long lasting legacy enhacing the city’s awareness and reputation globally, attracting more investment and tourism, creating a more suistainable and competitive city on the world stage.
